of the Annual Business Meeting

1. Welcome. Lisa
Baker gave a warm welcome to the registered guests at this year's meeting.
She thanked her fellow organizer, Kjell Svensson, and several others,
including the vendors, and the finacial support of PNU and WMU President
Elson Floyd, who helped make this meeting a successful event.
2. Secretary's Report. Gary Dunbar indicated that minutes of the Councilor's
meetings of May 16, 1998 and February 5, 1999 were posted on the web,
along with pictures of Brain Awareness Week (BAW) events. He encouraged
Councilors to supply any photos or doucuments concerning this year's
BAW events to him for posting on the Chapter website.
3. Treasurer's Report. Keith Lookingland indicated that there was approximately
$3200.00 balance left from last year's events. He indicated that it
appeared that this year's event would provide some finacial gain, although
the final tally remains to be determined. He thanked the generous contributions
of WMU and PNU in helping finance this year's events. The contribution
by PNU for supporting the Chapter and Poster Awards was especially helpful.
4. President's Report. Matthew Galloway thanked Lisa Baker, Kjell Svensson
and their associates for the terrific job they did in organizing this
year's conference. He reviewed last year's accomplishments, which included
increasing the Chapter's communication via our website and increasing
our Chapter's involvement in Brain Awareness Week. He encouraged those
that have not yet gotten involved in BAW activities to do so, not only
because it serves a very useful purpose, but because it is fun to do.
He also gave a special recognition for Kristi Haik-Creguer for her outstanding
work as our Chapter's webmaster.
5. Amendment to Bylaws. The amendment to the Bylaws (as posted on the
Chapter website) was presented by President Galloway. The Bylaw change
was to introduced to include Central Michigan University and Western
Michigan University as member organizations of the Michigan Chapter
of the Society for Neuroscience. The motion to accept these changes
was made and seconded. Motion carried.
6. Elections. Those chosen in this year's elections were: Peter Cobbett
(Secretary), Paul Walker (Awards Chair), Audrey Seasholtz (Counselor
from University of Michigan), Laura Smale (Counselor from Michigan State
University), Sean Donevan (Counselor from Park-Davis), Lisa Baker (Councilor
from Western Michigan University), Verne Hulce (Councilor from Central
Michigan University) and Amy Goodwin (Student Counselor).
7. New Business. Matthew Galloway introduced Gary Dunbar as the new
Chapter President. Dunbar thanked Galloway for his dedicated efforts
and service to the Chapter. He vowed to continue to work at increasing
the communication among neuroscientists and between the neuroscience
community and the general public. He also indicated that he would work
hard to help the Chapter grow and prosper, and to celebrate neuroscience
in Michigan. Dunbar presented a resolution (found on the Chapter website)
and a placque recognizing the distinguished service of Montford Piercey
to the Chapter. A motion to accept the resolution was made and seconded.
Motion carried.
8. Presentation of Awards. Kjell Svensson announced this year's award
winners: Amy Goodwin, WMU, and Matthew Bianchi (Outstanding Graduate
Poster); Heather Foran, Western Michigan University (Outstanding Undergraduate
Poster); William Lipinski, Parke-Davis (Outstanding Research Associate
Poster); Deborah Otteson, U of M (Chapter Award); and Gregory Basura,
Wayne State ( Duncan McCarthy Award).
